WATCH: Jason Day is making waves with streetwear-inspired on-course outfits

For decades, PGA Tour laws and rulings have made it difficult for pros to wear fashionable outfits that reflect their personalities on the course.

Professional golfers of recent years have all sported the same outfits at tournaments: slim-fitting trousers and close, collared shirts.

In urban cultures around the world, streetwear is becoming a mass avenue to express yourself, with people choosing to make their statement through fashion.

Following the end of his long-term partnership with Nike, 2015 PGA Championship winner Jason Day made the bold step to become the first Tour Pro to sport Malbon apparel.

Founded in 2017 by Steve Malbon, it’s a lifestyle brand that combines golf with streetwear from other cultures, such as skateboarding, surfing, winter sports and hip-hop.

With a mission of making golf ‘cool’ again, the Australian former World No.1 has been sporting some outfits that are baggier and more lifestyle-influenced than usual – the idea to attract a younger audience.

Malbon’s collaborations include golf brands such as FootJoy, TaylorMade and Nike.

However, the reaction to Day’s progressive brand endorsement hasn’t all been positive, with critics stating that he was sporting ‘too much fabric’ and that it’s ‘disrespectful’ to the norms of golf.

The brand has also recruited English golfer Charley Hull as the face of their women’s range.

Hull has gained traction for her outgoing personality and willingness to promote her image on the world stage.

Upon signing her deal with the brand, she explained that she was “proud to represent this stylish and creative lifestyle brand”.

The Los Angeles-based brand is picking up traction on social media and is playing its part in instilling a youthful energy in the sport.
