Willet named Euro golfer of the month

Danny Willet picked up his second European tour golfer of the month this season by being named July’s best player on the European tour.

During the month of July, Willet finished a respectable sixth place at the Open championship in St Andrews and added a third European tour title to his name when he won the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre.

On his award, the Englishman was extremely grateful to be the recipient and added that there are plenty of other golfers on the European tour circuit that could have won it.

“It’s always great to win Golfer of the Month,” the 27-year-old told skysports.com.

“It means out of the 200-odd guys on Tour, people think you have played the best. There were some great contenders in July such as Matt Fitzpatrick, Louis Oosthuizen and Bernd Wiesberger, so to come out on top is great.”

Willet received his first European tour golfer of the season award last December, after he won the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa.

The Sheffield-born player admitted that his Alstom Open de France performance was probably his worst of July but was glad at the fact that he was able to turn it around in the remaining two tournaments of the month.

“There are only 12 months in a year and to win this award twice now is a nice honour. It was a great month for me,” he explained.

“It started off quite slow in France, then I didn’t play Scotland, but I put in some hard work and the performances in the Open and Switzerland topped it off. To get to the end of a month and have a win and sixth in a Major, you can’t really complain.”
