Masters champion Bubba Watson has vowed to play some attacking golf during the final round of the Open Championship in an attempt to put pressure on the leaders.

“I still have to shoot a low round on Sunday, but it can be done.”

The American came within five strokes of the lead after picking up four birdies in six holes, but fell back again after the a bogey at the 14th and a six at the 15th.

Nevertheless, he shot a 68 to leave him two-under for the tournament, although he admits he would need some assistance from the weather gods on Sunday to mount a challenge on the leader Adam Scott.

“I was up there early, I got to five under then struggled with a three putt, but any time you shoot under par in a major championship it’s pretty good,” he said.

“If you look at where I was on Friday it was pretty good. It looked like I was going to miss the cut, as bad as I was playing.

“I still have to shoot a low round on Sunday, but it can be done. To shoot a low round here you’re going to have to hit some great iron shots but also make a lot of long putts.”

According to predictions there will be a stiff breeze blowing for most of Sunday, and Watson is aware he may need to change his set-up somewhat.

“Hitting quality golf shots is going to be tougher just because it’s going to change your swing and it is going to be harder to hit fairways, harder to hit greens because of the rougher winds,” he added.

“But for a guy like me that’s way back, we need tough conditions so we can play great and hope to move up.”
