Watson not overly concerned by poor form
The two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson heads to Royal Birkdale having struggled of late with just two top 10s from 18 starts but does not seem phased.
Since his Masters’ victories in 2012 and 2014, the former world number two’s ranking has plummeted to 49th – but he says he is not overly concerned as he loves his life at the moment.
The 38-year-old American does not only focus on his golf career any longer as he has plenty of other interests to occupy his time with, namely: his candy store ‘Bubba’s Sweet Spot’ in Florida; his wife and two young kids, his baseball team called the Pensacola Blue Wahoos and the G/Fore clothing line which he helps promote.
In an interview carried by The Express, Watson said his priorities had changed to his family and life in general.
“I guess life happened. If you’re spending time on something then something else has to give. How can I make my wife feel like a princess or my queen?
“How can I make my kids feel as if they are the only things that count in the world? I have a two-year-old daughter Dakota who is wild like I was and who sleeps two hours a night and screams and hollers.
“I have a five-year-old son Caleb who wants my attention. Would you focus on golf or this?
“I’m smart, but I’m not smart enough to do both. Jack Nicklaus was able to play golf and be a great father and I’ve not figured it out yet.”
Watson told fans at Royal Birkdale that he plans on having fun at The Open Championship and told them to expect the unexpected from him when the tournament starts on Thursday.
“I always say to my caddy let me paint, let me be the artist and create a shot. He said ‘Ok, I’ll be a fan and just watch it’.
“On links courses, your imagination can run wild.”
