World No. 3 headlines seven gutted PGA Tour stars eliminated from FedEx Playoffs

It is finally here, Tour Championship week is upon us, and the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings will fight it out for the $10million winner’s prize cheque at East Lake.
The final event of the postseason FedEx Cup Playoffs is the most lucrative on the PGA Tour and can often be a season-defining event for Tour stars.
Justin Rose won the first postseason event with a timeless performance at the St. Jude Championship, while Scottie Scheffler claimed the second in a BMW Championship win that brought heartbreak to Robert McIntyre.
However, only the top 30 secured a place in the field of the coveted Tour Championship.
Let’s take a look at seven unfortunate PGA Tour stars who were eliminated at the BMW Championship and will miss the season ender…
Which 7 huge names will miss the Tour Championship?
1. Xander Schauffele
- FedEx Cup finish: 42
- PGA Tour wins: 9
- OWGR ranking: 3
Why a big miss: The world number three is a big event player who’s won two Major tournaments and Olympic gold. However, for his high standards, 2025 has been a winless year to forget for the American who’s struggled to find any rhythm since an injury setback at the start of the year.
Still, he’s undoubtedly inside the top 30 players on the PGA Tour, whose class will be missed by golf fans at the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake.
2. Rickie Fowler
- FedEx Cup finish: 32
- PGA Tour wins: 6
- OWGR ranking: 87
Why a big miss: The 2015 Players Championship winner has long been struggling for form with a falling world ranking and no event wins since the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2023.
The Californian seemed to finally find some consistency after multiple sponsorship exemptions, and some better performances helped him get deep into the FedEx Playoffs events, but he eventually fell agonisingly short of the top 30.
3. Matt Fitzpatrick
- FedEx Cup finish: 34
- PGA Tour wins: 2
- OWGR ranking: 37
Why a big miss: The 2022 U.S. Open champion has built a reputation for being a quietly consistent performer who seemingly always manages to make the weekend of big events. His percentage play and smart golf are exactly what is needed to succeed in high-pressure postseason tournaments.
Fitzpatrick managed two Major top-10 finishes in 2025 and fell just outside the top positions in 34th to end his season.
4. Lucas Glover
- FedEx Cup finish: 36
- PGA Tour wins: 6
- OWGR ranking: 48
Why a big miss: Lucas Glover is another Major winner who has been finding form at the right time but faltered at the BMW Championship in Baltimore, finishing tied for 40th and six places adrift in the FedEx Cup standings.
Despite being 45 years old, Glover is still mixing it among the best and shines with his golf smarts – fellow 45-year-old Justin Rose proved at the first playoff event that age is just a number.
5. Jason Day
- FedEx Cup finish: 41
- PGA Tour wins: 13
- OWGR ranking: 38
Why a big miss: While the former world number one has long been devoid of form, we all know the elite level of golf he’s capable of producing when the lights are on. He’s managed just one event win since 2018 and would have been desperate to return to winning ways in the postseason.
It marks another weekend of disappointment for the Australian; will we ever see him rediscover the form of old, or are his winning days behind him?
6. Ryan Fox
- FedEx Cup finish: 43
- PGA Tour wins: 2
- OWGR ranking: 36
Why a big miss: The Kiwi has shown glimpses of elite golf this year with his tactical awareness and ability to minimise mistakes, making him a contender at each event. Fox won his second PGA Tour event at the RBC Canadian Open this season, but hasn’t been able to build on the positive result.
For Ryan Fox, it may have been a case of peaking too early as he struggled with T50 and 43rd place finishes at the FedEx Playoff events.
7. Thomas Detry
- FedEx Cup finish: 44
- PGA Tour wins: 1
- OWGR ranking: 43
Why a big miss: The Belgian is a consistent figure among the best and has been for several years. His truly dominant seven-stroke WM Phoenix Open win was his maiden trophy on the PGA Tour, sparking excitement that he may build on the platform.
While 2025 has been a positive year for Detry, the Tour Championship would have been an opportunity to stake his claim as one of the best.
