The Masters Champions Dinner: What has been served at Augusta National down the years?

Masters Champions Dinner

Winners of Green Jackets don’t find it too easy to defend the swankiest new entry in their wardrobe.

In fact, only three champions have ever won the event in consecutive years – Jack Nicklaus in 1965-66, Nick Faldo in 1989-90, and Tiger Woods in 2001-02.

Of course, every defending champion of every event has a lot on his plate – tournament, sponsor and media obligations, for example.

But the returning Masters champion has a unique extra responsibility – he has to create a tasty meal for the traditional Tuesday Champions Dinner.

Yes, he will not only have his thoughts on food considered by everyone around the world who sees the menu – he must also impress all the golfers who have gone before him in history.

Quite the challenge.

What do we know of recent menus? Let’s take a look.

Scottie Scheffler is going to town this year

It perhaps makes sense that the first-time Masters champ plays it safe the first time he delivers a feast.

But the second time, he can push the boat out a bit.

This year, Scottie Scheffler’s second menu includes cheeseburger sliders, firecracker shrimp, and Scheff’s meatball and ravioli bites for appetizers.

The first course is Texas-style chilli, the main course wood-fired cowboy ribeye or blackened redfish with sides of mac & cheese, jalapeño creamed corn, soy-glazed Brussels sprouts, and chipotle-lime roasted sweet potatoes. Dessert is warm chocolate chip skillet cookie with vanilla bean ice cream.

It sounds quite the tummy filler.

Danny Willett went English – very English

As you might expect of a Yorkshireman (albeit one who is half-Swedish), Danny Willett went for a Sunday roast.

Prime rib came with roast potatoes, roast vegetables and – naturally – Yorkshire pudding. The other pudding (definitely not sweets) was apple crumble with vanilla custard and English cheese & biscuits.

Talking of desserts – Patrick Reed likes a choice

It was worth steering clear of the bread basket the year Patrick Reed picked the menu.

Why so? Well, on the dessert menu was a choice of tiramisu, vanilla bean crème brûlée or chocolate crunch cheesecake.

It was also the second brûlée of the evening after the corn crème brûlée on offer with either prime bone-in cowboy ribeye or mountain trout.

Tiger Woods also has a sweet tooth

After he won in 2019 the great man dished up a dessert trio of churros with chocolate sauce, flan and/or sopapillas (a Mexican fried pastry)

Jon Rahm absolutely delivered

There are some past champs who have a beef with LIV (Fred Couples – pictured above – is no fan) but they might fancy more of Jon Rahm’s beef from his 2024 meal.

His menu was a celebration of Spanish cuisine. The tapas-style appetizers included Iberian ham, Idiazabal cheese, Spanish omelette, spicy Basque chorizo, lentil stew and chicken fritters

Main was Basque ribeye with Tudela lettuce & piquillo peppers or Turbot with white asparagus, both options served with a Basque crab salad.

For dessert he glanced over the French border for puff pastry cake with custard & chantilly cream.
