Phil Mickelson was at a loss for words after missing the cut at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

Despite clearly trying his best, American Phil Mickelson was at a loss for words after missing the cut at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Annes on Friday.

During rounds of 73 and 78, the 42-year-old shot four double-bogeys and seven bogeys while only managing four birdies.

“I feel fine, it’s just my play sucks. I don’t know. It’s just really sloppy, everything feels off. I don’t know what to say. I’ve got some time now to figure it out,” he commented after his round.

According to playing partner Geoff Ogilvy – who is on even par after firing a 68 on Friday – Mickelson looked comfortable initially, but lost his way after double-bogeying the sixth, although back to back double bogeys on the 13 and 14 ended his feint hopes of qualifying for Saturday’s third round.

“I don’t know, he hit a lot of good shots,” Ogilvy noted.

“I mean, I just imagined today he was just going to come out and play well. He hit a good shot on the first. He was doing all right, and then where did it come all unraveled? Six?”

Mickelson claimed that his coach Butch Harmon, picked up a flaw in his swing during Thursday’s opening round and that he had it rectified, he looked in worse form on Friday.

“I’ll work with Butch in the next week and see if I can get in a better frame of mind for the next two months because we have got some big tournaments and I have a lot of work to do in the next 10 days to be ready,” the four-time major champion added.

Mickelson won’t play again until the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on August 2, before the PGA Championship starts the week after.
