Streb earns clubhouse lead

Robert Streb has the clubhouse lead after his opening round at the 144th Open Championship in St Andrews on Thursday.
As one of the first players to tee off, the American carded a six under 66 at the Home of Golf.
The 28-year-old was simply superb on the opening nine, rolling in five birdies before a bogey on the par four tenth. He would get two more gains on the back nine. Interestingly enough, this is Streb’s first ever visit across the pond to Europe.
Another player taking advantage of the dry weather, soft greens and slight breeze included David Lingmerth, who would find himself seven under after the opening nine. But the Swede battled through the back nine with a double bogey on 17th leading to him closing on three under.
Kevin Na and amateur Jordan Niebrugge would finish on five under, one off the clubhouse lead.
However Streb’s lead is unlikely to last much longer. At the time of writing, two-time major winner Jordan Spieth and US Open runner-up Dustin Johnson were locked on six under after par putts on the 12th green.
