Stenson favourite for Euro award

Henrik Stenson is expected to be named as the European Golfer of the Year on Tuesday after a remarkable year which has seen him rise to third on the world rankings.

After several poor seasons, the Swede won the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup as well as winning the European Tour’s equivalent the Race to Dubai after triumphing at the DP World Tour Championship – a run of victories that saw rise to number three on the world rankings, behind Tiger Woods and Masters champion Adam Scott.

His biggest rival for the crown is Justin Rose, who became the first English winner of the US Open in 43 years when he triumphed at Merion to claim his maiden major title.

Although that was Rose’s only win of the year, so dramatic was his victory that it was enough to make him a possible winner.

Nevertheless, Stenson is the hot favourite to win the title. Not only did he win twice during the FedEx Cup play-offs, he finished second behind Phil Mickelson at the Open Championship, claimed another second place at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and then a third place finish at the PGA Championship.
