Rose stakes his claim

Justin Rose grabbed the clubhouse lead at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Friday after a solid three-under-par 67.

The Englishman’s eight under par total, set up by a flawless 65 on day one, was good enough for a one-shot lead at Firestone midway through the second round.

Starting from the 10th, Rose opened with four pars before dropping his first shot of the week on the 14th after finding a bunker off the tee. He was able to bounce straight back with a birdie from five feet on the par-three 15th.

Another birdie on the 18th took Rose to the turn in 34 and 2013 US Open champion picked up further shots on the first and fifth before leaving another birdie attempt agonisingly short on the ninth, his final hole.

Australian Marc Leishman, who led overnight, was in sole possession of second place after following up his opening 64 with a 69 to lie on seven under.

A pair of 67s left Rickie Fowler on six under after his first 36 holes.
