Park in cruise mode in Arkansas

Sung Hyun Park carded an eight-under-par-68 at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G on Friday to lead by two strokes.

Park’s round of 63 at the Pinnacle Country Club was a thing of beauty for those who can appreciate scrambling and good putting. She hit only eight of 13 fairways but was red-got with the flat-stick, using it just 24 times.

The round contained nine birdies. The South Korean will be fuming with the bogey she made at the short par-three-sixth though. That blemish was wedged between an impressive run of six consecutive birdies.

Speaking afterwards, Park admitted that her putter turned what could have been a very average round into a very good one.

“My play was best with putter today, very good,” Park said.

In pursuit of Park is England’s Mel Reid, South Korea’s So Yeon Ryu and the USA’s Ally McDonald. They are all on six-under-par. Reid’s round of 65 had an ace on the 11th.

“I mean, as soon as I hit it I thought, ‘oh, it's got a chance,'” Reid said about her tee shot on the short par-three.

“I just hit a little nine-iron, so I think it was 135. I just tried to play a 130 shot and it pitched about seven behind it and came back.”

Stacy Lewis is part of a group including Juli Inkster, Moriya Jutanugarn, Felicity Johnson and Katherine Kirk at five-under par.
