No US Open joy for Westwood and ‘Beef’ at Walton Heath
Lee Westwood and Andrew “Beef” Johnston both missed out on securing their US Open spots in the 36-hole US qualifier at Walton Heath.
With only 14 places available out of a 110-man field, Westwood bogeyed the final hole to end up on four-under and miss the cut.
Johnston was one shot worse off, finishing on three under.
The day belonged to Dean Burmester, who booked his place in the field at Pebble Beach with an impressive four-shot victory over Sam Horsfield.
The South African drained no less than 18 birdies to lead the 14 qualifiers on 16 under par.
“It was just one of those days when you roll out of bed and the putts start going in,” said Burmester.
“The US Open at Pebble Beach is up there with playing an Open at St Andrews because of the history, I’m excited to go out there and give it my best for four days.”
He’s joined by the likes of Horsfield, Lee Slattery, British Masters champion Marcus Kinhult, Belgium’s Thomas Pieters and Italy’s Renato Paratore.
Nacho Elvira, Andrea Pavan, Romain Wattel and Bernd Wiesberger all qualified as well.
