Mickelson withdraws from Match Play

Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from this week’s WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship in San Francisco, citing personal reasons.

The five-time major champion’s withdrawal has paved the way for Finland’s Mikko Ilonen to enter.

Mickelson admitted he was disappointed he would miss the knockout event at TPC Harding Park.

“I’m really happy with the new format and TPC Harding Park is a terrific setting for match play, so it’s unfortunate that I won’t be able to play this year,” he said.

Ilonen, last year’s Volvo World Match Play Championship winner, joins the 64-man field, and is ranked 62nd.

The tournament gets under way on Wednesday.
