The world number one continued his hot streak at Crooked Stick to claim back-to-back wins in the FedEx Cup play-offs.
Having begun the day one shot off the pace, behind Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh, McIlroy shot the low round of the top ten to edge out Mickelson and Lee Westwood.
Tiger Woods carded a 68 to finish tied fourth with fellow American Robert Garrigus while Dustin Johnson and Adam Scott were a further shot adrift. A closing 73 saw Singh’s challenge peter out as he finished five shots back.
A solid base was the key to McIlroy’s final day charge as three birdies on the back nine and three on the closing nine meant that even a bogey on the final hole didn’t scupper his chances.
With Mickelson failing to fire it was Westwood who looked the most dangerous as he took the turn in 33. However, he was unable to continue his strong run as he managed just one birdie on the second nine which was cancelled out with bogey on the very next hole.
“I knew if I played to my ability I would win events but I didn’t think everything would happen so quickly,” McIlroy said of his victory.
“I’m just on a great run at the minute and trying to keep that going for as long as possible.”
The win means that McIlroy is in pole position to take the $10m jackpot at the FedEx Cup finale ar the Tour Championship at East Lake in a fortnight and the 23-year-old admits that the play-offs present an interesting challenge.
“They’re big. You’ve got the best players in the world every week,” he said.
“Last week it was myself, Louis (Oosthuizen), Tiger, DJ (Dustin Johnson). This week myself, Phil, Lee, Tiger. The fields are really deep.”
