McIlroy misses another cut

Rory McIlroy missed the cut at the Irish Open after failing to recover from a nightmare score in the first round.
The world number one, who’s Rory Foundation is hosting the event, carded a nine-over 80 in Thursday’s opening round after shooting nine birdies and making par on the other holes.
He fared much better in Friday’s second round, shooting two birdies and a double bogey for an even-par 71.
However, the score could not prevent him from being cut and he finished tied for 102 on the leaderboard on nine-over.
“I was trying as hard as I could but just couldn’t get a good run of holes going. Unfortunately I just left myself too much to do,” he told the European Tour website.
“The support out there was phenomenal and it’s the third year in a row they are not going to see me playing on the weekend.
“I’m more disappointed for them. I’m honestly looking forward to two weeks off before the US Open.”
The poor performance at will be a setback for McIlroy ahead of the US Open, which starts on June 15.
