McIlroy has jibe at Trump

Rory McIlroy has taken a light jab at Donald Trump while playing in his tournament at the WGC – Cadillac Championship.
With Trump in the midst of a presidential campaign where he has thrown around some controversial comments and McIlroy’s popularity, it was almost inevitable that the former number one would be asked his thoughts on the matter.
Following his one-under 71 in the opening round at Trump National Doral, McIlroy was asked if the tournament should be moved away from the Trump-owned course because of his comments that could be deemed racist.
“I am not American,” the Belfast Telegraph quotes the four-time major winner as saying.
While this cued laughter amongst the press, McIlroy pressed on…
“He’s not going to be the leader of my country,” he added.
“Look, it really doesn’t bother me too much. I’ve been following it. I really thought I knew what politics were until I started to watch some of these Presidential debates.
“I mean, I’m not saying that the political system in Northern Ireland is too strong at the moment either.
“It is…it’s shocking [ in the US]. I can’t vote and if I were to vote I’m not sure I would want to vote.”
Perhaps he was annoyed after tournament officials handed his caddy a bib with ‘MCLLROY’ on the back.
Let’s hope McIlroy does not end up eating his words, as if he wins on Sunday, it’s likely Trump himself will present the trophy. Awkward.
