McIlroy extends stay at top

World number one Rory McIlroy has extended his lead at the top of the rankings following his splendid victory in the US PGA Championship on Sunday.

McIlroy, in his third win in as many event, carded a final round 69 at Valhalla to finish 16-under-par – one stroke clear of Phil Mickelson.

The Northern Irishman has also further extended the gap between himself and Australia’s Adam Scott.

Mickelson improved from 13th to 9th – knocking Tiger Woods out of the top 10 after he failed to make the cut.

Meanwhile Henrik Stenson’s share of third place moved him above Sergio Garcia to third overall.
