McIlory admits he’s down, but not out

Rory McIlroy has likely failed to salvage his winless year at this week's BMW Championship, but it is a space he has been in before.

The Northern Irishman will start the third round of the BMW Championship 15 strokes shy of leader Marc Leishman on Saturday and is in doubt to make the cut for the PGA Tour’s season finale at the TOUR Championship next week.

But McIlroy is not too fazed by the lack of results, indicating that he has pulled himself out of slumps before. After a poor showing in 2013, McIlroy bounced back to win the Open and PGA Championships. 

"I've been through the ups, I've been through the downs,” the four-time major winner told EPSN.

"I know it all sort of evens out in the end. In 2013, I bounced back with a great year in 2014. I completely expect myself to play well next year.

"It [2013] was worse in terms of where my game was at. Some parts I was completely lost. This year it wasn't like that. It was more of a physical thing holding me back, not getting as much time on the practice range or the golf course that I needed to feel like I can compete. This is not as bad of a year as 2013 was as far as swing-wise and results where my game is at. But it's still been a tough year."

McIlory added that he can start by finding some form over the weekend at Conway Farms.

"I'm here, so I might as well give it my best," he continued 

"It's a very long shot that I'm going to make it to next week. I'll try my best over these next couple of days and see what I can do. I still want to go out and play well. I don't want to go out there and completely throw it in."
