The 7 lowest rounds ever at TPC River Highlands, including Jim Furyk’s historic 58

Jim Furyk celebrates his 58 - the lowest round in PGA Tour history.

TPC River Highlands hosts the Travelers Championship and has become a showground for low scoring on the PGA Tour over the years.

The par 70, 6,841-yard private course in Hartford, Connecticut, has hosted the event since 1984, though under varying names due to sponsorship reasons.

Its short length, wide fairways and large greens make the course ideal for going low, with several PGA legends exploiting its forgiving nature to card incredible scores over the years.

Let’s take a look at the 7 lowest scores at TPC River Highlands in recent history…

4= Brad Faxon – 61 (2005)

At the 2005 Buick Championship (now the Travelers Championship), Faxon lit up the scoreboard with a 61 thanks to spotless putting and making the most of the soft conditions in Connecticut.

He struck 17 greens in regulations and hit 11 fairways in his 9-under-par final round to force a playoff and eventually beat Tjaart van der Walt to win the title.

4= Scott Verplank – 61 (2001)

In 2001, Verplank joined the exclusive sub-62 club with an impressive score of 61, matching one other player for the lowest round of the tournament.

He carded nine birdies to share the low-round honours with Phil Mickelson despite finishing seven strokes behind him over 72 holes.

4= Phil Mickelson – 61 (2001)

At the same event, Mickelson’s flawless weekend tournament win at TPC River Highlands included a third-round 61 to win the title by one stroke.

The round was vintage Mickelson with his aggressive iron play and red-hot putting on display as he also carded nine birdies on the Saturday in Hartford.

4= Kirk Triplett – 61 (2000)

A year earlier, in 2000, Kirk Triplett kicked off the run of low scores with a brilliant 61 with nine birdies to finish nine-under-par and showcase the low-scoring potential of the golf course.

Despite finishing four strokes back in third, it was one of the earliest 61s in modern course history, and Triplett was a pioneer for the excellence that followed him.

3. Patrick Cantlay – 60 (2011)

Just 19 years old, an amateur and six years before the first of his eight PGA Tour wins, Patrick Cantlay stunned the world and gave us a glimpse of what was to come with his heroic round of 60 at TPC River Highlands.

The 10-under-par performance stood as a course record for five years and remains one of the most impressive rounds from an amateur. He carded eight birdies and a 20-foot putt for eagle to light up Connecticut.

2. Cameron Young – 59 (2024)

In the third round of the 2024 Travelers Championship, Cameron Young etched his name deep into the record books with an 11-under-par 59 at TPC River Highlands.

It was the second sub-60 score in the event’s history and confirmed the course’s status as a low-scoring hotspot on the PGA circuit. He eagled holes 3 & 15 and was -5 after four holes as he dominated in birdie-friendly conditions.

1. Jim Furyk – 58 (2016)

Topping the list is Jim Furyk’s remarkable 58 – the lowest single-round score in PGA Tour history.

His 12-under-par lap included 10 birdies and an eagle, and a staggering 18 greens hit in regulation. There have been 14 rounds of 59 on the PGA Tour, but no player has ever equalled Furyk’s incredible final-round at TPC River Highlands.

Despite playing arguably the best round in the history of professional golf, Furyk finished tied for fifth, three strokes off Russell Knox, who won the 2016 Travelers Championship.
