Gaby Lopez clinches maiden LPGA title in China

Gaby Lopez won her first LPGA Tour event, edging Ariya Jutanugarn in the Blue Bay tournament in China on Saturday.

Despite bogeys on 17 and 18, Lopez scraped home for victory by one stroke as she finished on eight-under-par for the week.

Speaking afterwards, Lopez dedicated her first ever LPGA triumph to her grandfather.

“I always told him that I was going to give him my first trophy,” Lopez said.

“Sadly I didn’t, but he was with me all week long and I couldn’t be more lucky, more fortunate to have him still alive in me.”

Jutanugarn, who will be frustrated by a sloppy one-over-par-73, was full of praise for the way the Mexican kept the field at bay for the most part of Friday and Saturday.

“She did a great job last two days,” Jutanugarn said.

The tournament wrapped up five straight weeks of play for the LPGA in Asia.
