Kuchar withdraws from St Jude

After making a late commitment to the event, Matt Kuchar has decided to withdraw from this week’s St Jude Classic.

The World No 5 was set to be the highest ranked player in the field after only making himself available late last Friday afternoon, but announced on Tuesday that he had opted against taking part.

The reason for his withdrawal had nothing to do with illness or injury, but rather the wish to stay as fresh as possible ahead of the US Open at Pinehurst the following week.

The decision is understandable as the St Jude Classic would have been the American’s sixth consecutive tournament in as many weeks on the PGA Tour.

Gary Christian will take Kuchar’s spot in the field, while the further withdrawals of Justin Hicks and Seung-Yul Noh opened the door for Brooks Koepka and Cameron Beckman.
