Justin Thomas : ‘I made a terrible, terrible judgement call’

Justin Thomas vowed to learn from his mistakes as he reflected on the fallout from his offensive remark during the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

The American was heard using a homophobic slur towards himself after missing a par putt on the fourth hole during Saturday’s third round at Kapalua.

Thomas ultimately missed out on a spot in the play-off for the title by one shot after carding a seven-under-par 66 in the final round. Harris English (69) and Joaquin Niemann (64) contested the sudden-death decider, with the former coming out on top with a birdie on the first hole.

Asked afterwards if he had been distracted at all by what happened on Saturday, Thomas said: “Certainly. Golf wasn’t the main thing on my mind.

“Usually, being four back going into Sunday, I’m thinking about one thing and one thing only and that’s trying to win the golf tournament, but I obviously had a lot of other things on my mind last night.

“I mean, I apologised yesterday. I don’t need to explain myself, I clearly screwed up. I made a terrible, terrible judgement call.

“But I thought a lot last night, that we grow a lot as people over time. I wish that I could learn to grow a different way than the way that I chose to do it, but unfortunately, it’s in the past and there’s nothing I can do about it now.

“Again, it definitely was a distraction out there today, I just have to take the time going forward and try to become better because of it.”
