Jordan Spieth: I’ve already had a fantastic career

Jordan Spieth says even if he never had another good year, he’ll still have had a pretty great career.
The American experienced the worst professional season of his career in 2018. Aside from going winless and managing just five top-10 finishes in 23 starts, a 31st-place finish in the US tour’s FedExCup points race meant he failed to qualify for the Tour Championship for the first time ever.
That’s a far cry from the kind of runaway success he enjoyed between 2015 and 2017 when he captured 10 PGA Tour victories – three of them majors.
But having tried too hard to force the results to come last year, Spieth is now adopting a more relaxed approach, one that takes into account how much success he has already enjoyed.
“Your career is not defined by a couple of bad years and I could have really poor years the rest of my career and still have a pretty fantastic career,” Spieth told reporters on Wednesday.
“If I think about it that way it certainly makes me happier, frees me up a bit. I’m in a good place now.”
Earlier this year, Spieth also admitted that he never really reflected on his incredible early success, or indeed really tried to stake stock of how he achieved it.
“I almost took ignorance is bliss in a lot of parts of my game. I did things well, but I didn’t know why. I just did them. Then they got off, and so I had to figure out why I did them well and how to train it back.”
Spieth returns to action at this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he won two years ago.
