Nelly Korda’s ascent to the top of the women’s game has been a remarkable one.

The American is still only 26 but has already notched up 15 wins on the LPGA Tour, with nearly half of that number coming in her remarkable 2024 season.

We unpack what makes Korda tick on and off the course.

Born? Korda was born on 28/7/98 in Bradenton, Florida. Her father, Petr, is a Grand Slam winner in tennis having won the 1998 Australian Open while her mother, Regina, also represented Czechoslovakia. Of course her sister, Jessica, has won multiple times on the LPGA Tour and they partnered one another in the Solheim Cup. Her brother, Sebastian, has been as high as 15th in the world in tennis.

Turn pro? She turned pro in 2016 and won on her first start on the Symetra Tour. She ended the season ninth on the money list to elevate herself to the LPGA Tour. Korda then had to wait until the end of 2018 for her first victory on the LPGA Tour, a two-shot victory in Thailand.

Married? Nelly Korda has been in a relationship with Andreas Athanasiou since 2019. Athanasiou is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre for the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League and is under contract to the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League.

Car? She was sponsored by Kia but now drives a BMW X5.

Lives? She still resides in Bradenton in Florida where she was born and raised.

Favourite food? The American enjoys sushi, Korean, Mediterranean and Greek food and admits to enjoy ‘cheat food’ such as pizza. She also enjoys cooking goulash and white fish with roasted vegetables.

Favourite sporting teams? Korda has shown her support for her boyfriend’s team, the Chicago Blackhawks, by wearing a Blackhawks jersey at the 2022 CP Women’s Open.

Golfing friends? Korda hangs out with Megan Khang, Alison Lee and her sister Jess. They all played junior golf together and they will typically spend time in a coffee shop or eating Korean/sushi dishes.

Earnings? In 2024 Nelly Korda earned a total of $14.4m which was made up of $4.4m from on-course earnings and $10m from endorsements. That meant she was the eighth highest-paid female athlete across all sports.

Equipment? Korda signed a deal with TaylorMade at the start of 2023, for clubs, ball, headwear and bag. At the same time she went to Nike for her apparel and shoes, much like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.

Biggest achievement? In 2024 Korda won a ridiculous seven times, including a run of five on the trot which culminated in her landing her second Major at the Chevron Championship. She is also an Olympic gold medallist having prevailed in Tokyo in 2021.
