Howell opts out of Open

American Charles Howell III has decided not to take part in the Open Championship, and will be replaced by Dane Thorbjorn Olesen.

Howell qualified for the year’s third major by virtue of his world ranking, but gave no reason for his decision not to take part.

His best finish in the tournament was a share of 28th in 2011.

Fellow American Chris Stroud is now first reserve, followed by England’s Ross Fisher and Canada’s David Hearn.
