Holmes, Hicks share lead

JB Holmes recovered from a disappointing play-off loss in last week’s Farmers Insurance Open to grab a share of the lead in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am first round on Thursday.

Holmes and Justin Hicks both carded eight-under 64’s and lead a pack of six players tied for third by a single shot.

Holmes told the PGA Tour website that he was focusing on the positives from last week’s loss instead of the negatives.

“I just got to keep reminding myself it was a great week for me, and I did everything I could do,” Holmes said.

“(I’ve got to) just carry that on to this week and maybe things will go a little bit different this week.”

Starting on the back nine, the 32-year-old got the round underway with an eagle, birdie and bogie on his first three holes.

He carded birdies again on the 16th, 17th, third, fourth, sixth and seventh holes to take the lead.

“The weather was awesome. So I was looking forward to the day,” he said.

“It was just a good day all around. I hit the ball well and hit my wedges really well. Hit them in their close and didn’t have to make too many long putts. So it was a lot of fun.”

Hicks, meanwhile, carded three birdies on the front nine, three more after the turn and finished off with an eagle on the final hole.

Defending champion Jimmy Walker is currently tied for 99th after he carded an even-par 72.
