Henderson defeats Ko for first major
Canadian teen Brooke Henderson defeated World number one Lydia Ko in a playoff to win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
The 18-year old Canadian world number four holed a birdie on the first playoff hole at the Salahee Country Club to become the second youngest winner of a major and end Ko’s quest for a third-straight major title.
Ko remains the youngest ever major winner with her victory at last year’s Evian Championship.
Henderson went bogey free in the final round in Washington, shooting a tournament best 65 to tie Ko’s six-under total of 278.
Then on the first hole of the playoff, Henderson hit her second shot at the par-4 18th to within three feet while Ko could only get to within 20 feet. Ko missed left before Henderson rolled in to seal an impressive win.
Earlier, Henderson sealed had her place in the playoff with a dramatic 12-footer for par on the final green.
Thailand’s Ariya Jautanugarn, who was vying for a fourth-straight win on the LPGA tour, shot a 66 to miss out on the playoff by just one stroke.
Jautanugarn missed a birdie putt on the final hole that would have seen her tie the leaders.
