Golf now my girlfriend – McIlroy

Rory McIlroy claims that golf is now his “girlfriend” following a much publicised split from tennis player Caroline Wozniacki in May this year.
McIlroy and the Danish former number one split only days after invites were sent out for the couple’s planned wedding, but since then the 25-year-old Ulsterman has had a remarkable season, starting with winning the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth just four days after the split.
He then won back-to-back major titles to bring his career tally to four and reclaim the world number one ranking in the process.
Speaking to BBC Northern Ireland ahead of the start of the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, McIlroy revealed that he simply doesn’t have time for a long-term relationship currently.
“Golf is my girlfriend at the minute and it’s going to be that way for a while,” said McIlroy.
“I’m at the stage of my career and the stage of my life when I’m putting golf first.
“Golf is the priority for me right now. For the foreseeable future that is what it is going to be.”
He added that their different travel schedules played a major role in his split from Wozniacki.
“We’re never really in the same place for very long. It is hard to keep relationships going [even] if you want to start one.”
