Jim Furyk has been crowned the US PGA Tour Player of the Year for the first time in his glittering career.

Furyk’s three wins on the tour in 2010, along with second place on the money list and fifth place on the scoring average chart, were enough for him to leapfrog the leading PGA Tour money earner Matt Kuchar.

“It’s a special moment and a special year,” said Furyk, who ended his season with earnings of $4,809,622.

“I’ve never had a three-win season before.”

Furyk claimed victory at the Transitions Championship and Verizon Heritage during the middle of the season and he then secured the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

That victory was also enough to win the FedEx Cup despite having been forced to miss the first event in the play-offs, the Barclays, from which he was controversially disqualified after sleeping in on pro-am day.

For that he picked up an additional $10 million pension.

Kuchar’s 11 top-10 finishes were enough for him to secure the honours as Money List champion and the Harry Vardon and Byron Nelson trophies given to the player with the lowest adjusted scoring average.

He edged out compatriot Steve Stricker by 0.05 with his average of 69.61 per round.

“It will be tough to follow this year up. You can go out and shoot a 62 but it’s hard to follow up that 62 the next day with another great round.

“That’s how I’m looking at next year. It will be quite a challenge,” Kuchar added.
