Edfors: I’m tough enough now

Johan Edfors is convinced he is mentally tough enough to contend for the majors after a solid first-round at the US Open
Johan Edfors insisted he is mentally tough enough to contend for major honours after carding a creditable first-round 70 at the US Open.
The flamboyant Swede, who has missed the cut in two of his three previous US Open starts, was delighted with his five-birdie opener at Congressional Country Club.
Edfors admitted he got away with a couple of “iffy” shots off the tee, although poor drives did cost him bogeys on the finishing holes of each nine.
“I’m really happy with the score,” said Edfors, one of 11 players to make the field from a 36-hole qualifier at Walton Heath on 30 May.
“I’ve been playing some really good golf. I hit a couple of iffy shots now and then off the tee, so I got away with a couple.
“But I hit a lot of really good iron shots, my putting was solid and I made a couple of good up-and-downs. So I’ve just got to try to improve my tee shots a little bit.
“I’ve always taken time to adapt. I didn’t feel comfortable in my first US Opens but playing a few you get used to it. I really feel like I’m ready for the test now.”
