Dufner surges back to claim The Memorial
Jason Dufner pulled off a sensational comeback after a nightmare third-round to claim a three-shot victory at The Memorial Tournament on Sunday.
Dufner set the 36-hole scoring record for the Muirfield Village tournament after shooting two 65s, but fell away badly on Saturday after a round of 77 left him four shots behind overnight leader Daniel Summerhays.
But Dufner was able to complete an unexpected comeback as Summerhays and Rickie Fowler faltered, as four birdies coming home helped him to his first title since January last year.
He even finished with a flourish, holing with a superb 36-foot putt to save par on the final green.
Dufner enjoyed a rollercoaster ride on the front nine, going birdie-bogey three times over six holes, but was able to recapture his early tournament form on the back nine despite two lengthy delays for storms.
The 40-year-old set up the win with birdies at the 10th, 12th, 15th and 17th as playing partner Fowler fell away with bogeys on the 14th and 18th for a disappointing 70 after he had played the first 12 holes in four under par.
Fowler finished at 10-under par alongside India’s Anirban Lahiri, who surged up the leaderboard thanks to a seven-birdie round of 65 that was easily the best of the day.
Justin Thomas (72) and Matt Kuchar (73) finished in a tie for fourth one shot further back.
Overnight leader Summerhays enjoyed a torrid time, carding two double bogeys on his way to a disappointing round of 77 that saw him finish six shots back of Dufner.
