Donald targeting return to top 50

After a good showing at the Open, Luke Donald is aiming a return to golf’s top-50 world rankings.

The Englishman, who returns to the PGA Tour this week for the RBC Canadian Open, shot a final-round 68 at St Andrews on Monday to finish on nine under, just one stroke outside the top 10.

Donald also finished joint-seventh at the Travelers Championship last month – which qualified him for the Open – and the former World No 1 is hoping to carry on his upturn in form this week.

“I go straight to Canada now, play the Canadian Open, and then I need to move back into the top 50 to get into Akron (WGC-Bridgestone Invitational),” Donald said.

“I am moving closer every week so hopefully I can have a solid week next week and get in the top 50.

“Yesterday was disappointing to shoot 73 on a day when 68 was probably par.

“I played average and just didn’t hole the putts when I had my opportunities and for me to be contending, I’ve got to putt extremely well for all four days.”
