Bryson DeChambeau shares lead at 3M Open

While Bryson DeChambeau shares a three-way tie for the lead of the inaugural 3M Open, it’s anyone’s silverware come Sunday.

The American signed for a one under 70 around TPC Twin cities, joining Matthew Wolff and Colin Morikawa at 15 under for the tournament. However, there are no less than 13 players within three shots of the lead, including Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama and two-time PGA Tour winner Troy Merritt.

Starting the day with a two shot lead thanks to a superlative career-low 62 on Friday, DeChambeau opened with a birdie on the first. But a cold putter lead to a run of eleven consecutive pars which was ended by a bogey on the 13th. The American finally had a putt drop on the last for a second birdie.

“I just didn’t make a couple putts that were necessary to give myself that three, four shot lead like I should have today,” the 25-year-old told the press.

“You’re not going to be perfect, but I can keep driving it well just like I have been, and become more and more confident, that’s the Bryson we saw last year.”

The round of the day came from newbie Wolff, who only just turned professional in June. With his biggest weapon being his driver, Wolff bombed his way to a six under font nine, then made three more gains before a solitary bogey on the par three 17th. A birdie on the last capped off a stunning nine under 62.

“It’s on a lot bigger stage, but our games played very well throughout the spring,” said the 20-year-old.

“We’re going to have to control our nerves, remember who we are, what brought us out here. These guys are really good, and I know I’m really good, so it’s going to be fun.”

Phil Mickleson was left disappointed once again, missing his fourth cut in six starts as he signed for two over 73.
