British celebrities and athletes with surprisingly low handicaps

Golf does not care about fame or personal status.

When out on the golf course everyone is equal, and if there is one thing that can be guaranteed it’s that this game will humble you.

Several A-list celebrities and athletes put in work behind the scenes to improve their game, and this is highlighted in the golfing calendar.

With Pro-Am tournaments that combine stars and golfers becoming more and more popular, these impressive and lesser-known skill sets are providing a new age of golfing entertainment.

The events provide a platform for celebs to unleash their hidden talents while giving the pros a welcome break from the seriousness of weekly, intense competition.

Here are the surprising handicaps of celebrities and athletes who also play golf…

Catherine Zeta-Jones (22)

The Hollywood star took up golf while filming a movie in Australia early in her career.

The filming lasted an extended amount of time, and as the Welsh actress was surrounded by golf courses, she decided to buy a set of clubs.

Having played in many Pro-Ams, she will not be putting down the clubs anytime soon.

Michael McIntyre (18)

The English comedian has a handicap of 18 and is a regular at golf courses in and around London.

At the 2024 BMW Wentworth Pro-Am, he joked that he would ‘enter with a handicap of 43’ for the 2025 competition.

Andy Murray (7)

Since retiring from tennis, the three-time grand slam champion and former world number one has been spending a lot of his time on the driving range.

Having switched his tennis racket for a set of golf clubs, he is showing no sign of slowing down as he pushes towards his next life goal of being a scratch golfer.

Naga Munchetty (6.5)

The BBC Breakfast presenter holds an impressive 6.5 handicap and is considered Britain’s stand-out female celebrity golfer.

When not on our TV screens, Munchetty is out on the course, readying herself for Pro-Ams.

Tom Holland (3)

The face of many Pro-Ams, the English actor is indeed a classy golfer with a competitive handicap of 3.

Known mainly for his role as Spider-Man in Marvel films, all eyes are fixated on Holland when he takes to the golf course.

James Anderson (2.6)

Another recently retired British sporting icon, James ‘Jimmy’ Anderson took over 700 wickets in his Test cricket career for England.

It’s well known that the England side spends a lot of their days off on various golf courses with former teammates such as Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Stuart Broad all very handy golfers along with Anderson, who plays off 2.6.

Anton Du Beke (1.4)

Strictly Come Dancing judge and professional Du Beke is ever present at Pro-Am events with his handicap of 1.4 showing he’s not there to make up the numbers.

His bubbly personality and technical ability make him a fan favourite.

Gareth Bale (0.5)

Wales, Golf, Madrid – in that order.

The former world-record football transfer and Champions League winner has always had time for golf, even if Real Madrid didn’t like it!

With a handicap of 0.5, even the Spanish giants have to respect it.

Dan Walker (+0.8)

The TV presenter and newsreader has earned an eye-wateringly impressive handicap alongside his career on our screens.

With a capability of shooting very low scores out on course, his +0.8 stroke is worth keeping an eye out for.
