Why balls should be marked
Before you play in any competition make sure you place a mark of sorts on the balls you will being playing with.

The mark should be as unique as possible to clearly indicate that the ball is yours.
In tournament after tournament, players are penalised or even disqualified for playing the wrong ball, so after marking your ball, make sure you show it to your playing partners.
This will help prevent the wrong ball with the same name and number being incorrectly identified as yours – and vice versa.
