Westwood wants a fifth Major

As the LPGA prepares to add the Evian Masters to its Major schedule, Lee Westwood has called for a 5th men’s Major.
As the LPGA prepares to expand its Major schedule to include the Evian Masters in 2013, world No. 2 Lee Westwood feels the men’s Major list should also be increased.
“I like the tradition of the majors,” Westwood told ESPNStar.com in China on Monday.
“I think the men’s game has got it pretty much right, although I’d like to see another major somewhere else in the world. Somewhere like Asia or Australia.”
Westwood is in China to compete in the Shui On Land China Golf Challenge – a seven-day, seven-city, rally-style tournament weaving through the country.
He feels the HSBC Champions best fits the bill for a fifth Major.
The tournament joined the World Golf Championship fold in 2009.
A step further, Westwood suggested the LPGA go to a half-dozen majors and add one in Asia.
“Look how many good Asian ladies there are at the moment. They should have a major in Asia. Every (time) you turn on the TV, it’s a Korean lady winning or that’s how it seems,” he said.
Earlier this summer LPGA commissioner Mike Whan said he envisioned the possibility of an Asian major.
“Does it make sense for us to have an Asian major? I think the answer is yes. But the timeline that goes with it is uncertain. If you ask me if Asia will have an LPGA major in 10 years, then the answer is highly likely,” Whan has said.
