Westerberg claims first LET win

Sweden’s Johanna Westerberg won her maiden Ladies European Tour title at the Portugal Ladies Open on Sunday.
Sweden’s Johanna Westerberg beat Spain’s Tania Elosegui in a play-off to claim her maiden Ladies European Tour title at the Portugal Ladies Open.
Westerberg holed a stunning bunker shot for birdie on the first hole of sudden death after finding the sand with both her first and second shots.
It was only the fifth birdie all day on the tough par-four 18th at Golden Eagle Residence and Golf and Westerberg admitted it was the shot of her life.
“To hole that to win, I couldn’t ask for more,” she said.
The 31-year-old Swede had fired a closing 67 to come from five shots off the pace at the start of the day.
Elosegui birdied the 18th to match her total of three under par, but was unable to repeat the trick in the play-off.
Westerberg paid tribute to her caddie and fiance, Swedish tennis star Joachim Johansson, who plays off a handicap of three and has made several appearances on the LET while he recovers from a shoulder injury.
“He has been helping me with lines and stuff so it’s been a big comfort to have him with me,” she said.
Wales’ Becky Brewerton (69) and Germany’s Bettina Hauert (67) shared third place on two under par with England’s Florentyna Parker and Scotland’s Pamela Feggans among six players another stroke back.
Overnight leader Lotta Wahlin slumped to a closing 76 to finish four off the pace.
All the final round scores & totals in the Ladies European Tour Ladies Open de Portugal, Golden Eagle Golf Club, Rio Maior, Portugal.
