Laura Davies lost the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open to Sweden’s Linda Wessberg in a sudden death play-off in Austria on Sunday.
After both recorded pars on the 16th, nerves seemed to hit on the 18th as Wessberg carded a six and Davies fared even worse, finding rough with her tee shot and twice hitting into the lake to record a seven.
The pair had finished at nine under par over four rounds, with Davies closing a two-shot gap between her and Wessberg in today’s final round.
Wessberg’s double-bogey on the par-three 10th put her in jeopardy of blowing her chances in this tournament, but she bounced back with four straight birdies as several players vied for the lead.
Davies had birdies on the 16th and 18th to force the play-off.
It is Wessberg’s first title in two years.
“I thought I’d lost it on number 10 when I made a double,” Wessberg said. “I told my mum (Elisabeth, also her caddy), “whatever, just forget about it,” and we made four birdies in a row and then we came back.
“I’m just so happy that I can actually show myself that I am able to win again. I had been struggling with a shoulder injury and stuff but I still played and I probably shouldn’t have. Mentally it was really hard.”
Davies came away disappointed with her performance on the final hole.
“I played well but at the end of the day second is the best loser,” she said.
“I’m very disappointed. If I’d hit the fairway I would have had a nice easy five iron into the green. It’s just one of those things.
“I had a 50/50 lie in the rough and I went for it, because you go for it in a play-off.
“It came out a little bit right and went into the water because it was wet, I suppose. The next shot was a shocker. What can you do?”
Ireland’s Hazel Kavanagh finished in a tie for third, her best finish in eight seasons, along with Gwladys Nocera of France and Germany’s Bettina Hauert.
