Using woods and hybrids in moderate rough

When you are faced with hitting a fairway wood or a hybrid club out of the moderate rough, try standing a little closer to the ball.

When you are faced with hitting a fairway wood or a hybrid club out of the moderate rough, try standing a little closer to the ball.
This will help you make more of an up and down swing than you normally do to get the ball into the air more easily.
Also take the club back more steeply than usual and strike the ball with a descending blow, ensuring you hit it first to avoid the grass behind it. Allow for a fair bit of roll when the it lands, though.
Even when the ball is down in the tough, fairway woods or hybrid clubs are most often better options than a long irons.
