USA look unstoppable at Merion

The United States are on course to retain the Walker Cup after extending their lead over Great Britain and Ireland to 11-5 following this morning’s Foursomes at Merion Golf Club.
The hosts won three of the four Foursomes to leave them needing just a further two points from this afternoon’s 10 singles matches to again lift this prestigious amateur title.
The visitors did themselves no favours with Gavin Dear and Matt Haines throwing away a glorious chance to pick up a much-needed point against Brian Harman and Adam Mitchell.
The Europeans had quickly opened up a three-hole advantage by the time they reached the fourth tee, only to give up their lead by the sixth and eventually lose 3&2.
Nathan Smith and Peter Uihlein were the most impressive winners today as they beat Chris Paisley and Dale Whitnell 5&4, while Rickie Fowler and Bud Cauley edged Stiggy Hodgson and Niall Kearney one up.
Wallace Booth and Sam Hutsby could claim the visitors’ only point as they overcame Drew Weaver and Brendan Gielow 3&2.
