Torrance: pick established stars

Former Ryder Cup winning captain Sam Torrance believes Colin Montgomerie should pick Padraig Harrington, Paul Casey and Luke Donald as his wild-card selections this evening for the up-coming match against the United States at Celtic Manor.
Torrance suggested Europe captain Montgomerie has already made up his mind about his team, regardless of what happens at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles and the FedEx Cup event in America later today.
Torrance, the European Ryder Cup captain in 2002 who made the winning putt for the team in 1985, believes Italian Edoardo Molinari, in contention to win at Gleneagles, is the man who has given Montgomerie headaches.
“He’s the fly in the ointment,” said Torrance. “His credentials are very strong. He won at Loch Lomond, won in Japan, he and his brother (Francesco) won the World Cup. They would be a formidable team but I think Colin’s made up his mind who he’s going to pick.”
Asked on BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme who he would select, Torrance added: “Harrington because of his three majors, he’s kind of the Tiger Woods of the European Tour, Paul Casey and Luke Donald.”
That selection would mean Justin Rose misses out.
Torrance believes Europe will go on to win the trophy but insists Tiger Woods must turn out for the USA.
Woods has not qualified automatically and is still coming to terms with his recent divorce, but Torrance said: “He’s obviously had a torrid time, it’s self inflicted, it’s his own fault but at least it’s over now, the divorce is through.
“He’s just got to sort out looking after the kids and get his mind back on what he does best and that’s playing golf and hopefully sooner rather than later.”
