Greg Rita, who caddied for Curtis Strange when he won successive US Open titles and for John Daly when he won the British Open, has died of brain cancer.

Rita died at the age of 54 on Saturday, his birthday, at a hospice, his wife Kelley has confirmed.

Rita was on the bag for Strange during his consecutive victories in 1988 and 1989, which made him the first back-to-back winner of the US Open in nearly 40 years.

He also worked for Daly in 1995 when he claimed the Open Championship title at St Andrews.

Rita also caddied for Gil Morgan, Scott Hoch, David Duval and Mark O’Meara during the course of his PGA Tour career.

He collapsed at a Champions Tour event in September 2007, and underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour two months later.
