Thumb trouble halts Langer’s run

Bernhard Langer has missed the cut for the first time in 21 appearances at the BMW International Open – but because a thumb injury had a lot to do with it, he was not overly concerned.

The German legend had never before failed to make the cut in this home event, but he shot an 11-over par across the opening two rounds as he struggled with a thumb injury and this time will be a spectator during the two weekend rounds.

“I am not taking the result too seriously,” Langer said after receiving warm applause from the crowd at the 18th green.

“If I was healthy and had shot rounds of 76 and 79, I would be very depressed, but I am not really fit – I played eight to 12 holes in quite a lot of pain.

“I now have two weeks off, I will visit my mother and then the British Open is my goal. I will do everything to try and manage some good rounds. It could be my last.

“The doctor has told me it will definitely get better – it has just been hard to play this week.”
