American Webb Simpson has won the battle of the rookies at the 140th Open Championship at Royal St George’s.
American Webb Simpson won the battle of the rookies on Sunday when he closed with a 73 to claim a top-20 finish at the 140th Open Championship at Royal St George’s.
The 25 year-old from Raleigh in North Carolina, was one of 39 members of the field making their debuts in the Championship and he came out top of the pile after posting a 72-hole aggregate of 285, three shots better than compatriot, Ryan Palmer, and a further one stroke ahead of another American, Gary Woodland, and leading amateur, Tom Lewis of England.
A total of 13 rookies survived the cut and played all four rounds.
In addition to Simpson, Palmer, Woodland and Lewis, Kyle Stanley finished on 291 and Floris de Vries, US Amateur champion Peter Uihlein and Richard McEvoy all tied on 292.
Further down the leaderboard, Joost Luiten, Mark Wilson and Matthew Miller shared 63rd place on 296,
Harrison Frazar was 69th on 299 while Korean Jung-Gon Hwang propped up the finishers on 304
The following 26 rookies all missed the cut after the first two rounds: Song-Moon Bae, Lucas Bjerregaard, Lee Corfield, Robert Garrigus, Craig Hinton, Scott Jamieson, Andrew Johnston, Hiroo Kawai, Brad Kennedy, Jason Knutzon, Rick Kulacz, Mark Laskey, Simon Lilley, Bryden Macpherson, Martin Maritz, Francis McGuirk, Prom Meesawat, Thorbjorn Olesen, Neil Schietekat, Tom Shadbolt, Andy Smith, Kevin Streelman, Chris Tidland, Peter Whiteford, Danny Willett and Adam Wootton.
