Seventeen-year-old sinks Stricker

Teenaged Matteo Manassero produced the shock of the day at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.

Italian teenager Matteo Manassero produced the shock of day one at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship at Dove Mountain in Arizona.

The 17-year-old Italian beat the world No 8 American Steve Stricker, sealing a 2&1 victory with a birdie-three at 17.

Manassero had been one down at the turn but back-to-back wins at 16 and 17 ended the challenge of the American, the 2001 WGC Match-play champion.

Manassero took the lead at the 16th, when Stricker missed a six-footer and then closed out the match by holing a 20-foot birdie putt at the next.

Manassero said: “It’s already a big achievement for me. I’m not expecting that much out of match play against such big players. Everybody here is very good.”

He now faces Charl Schwartzel in round two, after the South African needed 20 holes to finish off 19-year-old Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa.
