The Nevada tournament is making used of the Stableford scoring system which rewards aggressive play. Players receive eight points for double eagle, five for eagle, two for birdie, zero for par, minus-one for bogey and minus-three for double bogey or worse.
Romero didn’t blot his copy book once on the day, notching up seven birdies.
“I had a good feeling on the greens and that’s why I got the score,” Romero told the official PGA Tour website.
“It’s unusual to see scores on the board like (plus) 14 or 12 or whatever,” he added of the scoring system that he is playing with for the first time.
Rookie Seung-Yul Noh is one point adrift of Romero after shooting seven birdies of his own but bogeying the seventh hole.
Josh Teater, Ricky Barnes and John Mallinger are a further two shots back on eleven points.
Padraig Harrington, one of the view top players to pick the Nevada event, managed to muster just seven points in an up and down round that consisted of an eagle, three birdies and four bogeys.
