Rickie Fowler

USA
The 21-year-old with the surfer’s mop of hair is America’s answer to Rory McIlroy: young, talented on the course, a natural with the media and public off the course and apparently destined for great things. He turned professional last summer after two Walker Cup appearances that earned him seven points from a potential eight. That flair for matchplay golf was a big factor in his selection as was the fact that he will bring electricity to the American team. It is not just that he is young, fresh and undaunted by anyone’s reputation, it is also that he bonds brilliantly with Bubba Watson. The good vibes those two create could really help Team USA’s mood. One concern for Fowler is his form: no top-10 finish since the first week of June. Another potential problem might be wearing team colours. Famous for his fashionable Puma gear – and especially his orange outfits in the final round – he might find the absurdities of Ryder Cup gear a distraction! More seriously, his Ryder Cup debut could be a very special turning point in his career.
