Recari edges in front in Helsinki

Beatriz Recari struck a six-under-par opening round to establish a one-stroke lead in the Finnair Masters in Helsinki today.
Beatriz Recari struck a six-under-par opening round to establish a one-stroke lead in the Finnair Masters in Helsinki today (Friday).
The 22-year-old Spaniard claimed seven birdies, with her only blemish in her round of 65 coming in the par-four 18th
Iben Tinning of Denmark, meanwhile, birdied the same hole to put herself clear in second.
Recari, who also led after the first round last year, told www.ladieseuropeantour.info: “Overall I think I did a great job mental wise on every single shot.
“I’m not going to punish myself for a bogey on the last because six-under is quite good and I have a good feeling for tomorrow.”
Recari, who achieved a career-best third last time she came to Helsinki, added: “I love this tournament. I had two weeks off before this tournament and I was visualising it and really looking forward to coming here again, remembering good memories.
“I wrote in my blog that I was looking forward to this week. It was just, not magical, but it was such an enjoyable round. I was enjoying every shot, every hole, it was great.”
Becky Brewerton of Wales claimed a share of third place with a four-under round of 67, alongside Sweden’s Johanna Westerberg, South African Lee-Anne Pace Je-Yoon Yang, the 17-year-old South Korean amateur.
Brewerton, a member of the European team who lost the Solheim cup last week, said: “I’m very happy. I played pretty good. I felt really relaxed and calm and it was nice after the furore of last week.
“Today is probably the first day I’ve felt normal again.
“The rest of the week so far I’ve been in a bit of a daze but I’ve had an unbelievably long sleep last night and felt really good this morning.
“I’ve probably timed it perfectly to be playing well today.”
England’s Holly Aitchison was in a group of five tied for seventh on three under, with Lynn Kenny of Scotland a further shot behind alongside defending champion Minea Blomqvist and two others.
