Rankings joy for Watney, Hansen

Nick Watney’s victory in the WGC-Cadillac Championship has hoisted him from 31st to 15th in the World Rankings.

Nick Watney’s victory in the WGC-Cadillac Championship has hoisted the American young gun from 31st to 15th on the latest official World Ranking list.

But nobody would have been happier when the new World Rankings were announced on Monday than Denmark’s Anders Hansen, who tied for third at Doral with Italian Francesco Molinari..

His efforts have elevated him from 55th to 43rd, where his chances of staying in the top 50 for the next two weeks and thus qualifying for the Masters next month look very promising indeed.

The week was also good for Dustin Johnson.

In holding off an elite field of the World’s Best golfers and chasing Watney all the way to the 18th at Doral’s TPC Blue Monster before he finally conceded victory by just one shot , runner-up Johnson also took a big step up the World Ranking ladder where he replaced Ernie Els as the World No 11.

Up front the top 10 led by German Martin Kaymer with England’s Lee Westwood in second place and Tiger Woods back in 5th place, looked very much as it did last week, the only changes seeing Matt Kuchar moving up into the ninth from 10th place after his fifth-place finish at Doral and Steve Stricker dropping back to 10th from 9th.

Els, who was the defending champion at Doral, but is still struggling to get his putter going this year, has in fact dropped back into 13th place with Jim Furyk coming in at 12.
