The prize fund for next month’s Irish Open at Killarney has been slashed by nearly 50% it has been disclosed.

Prize money at next month’s Irish Open at Killarney has been slashed by nearly 50% because of the lack of a headline sponsor.

The Irish Big Three, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington are among the high profile international stars who will be on show, but they the field will be playing for £1.35million instead of £2.6million.

Telecommunications company 3 pulled out last November, saying: “Following a review of our sponsorship portfolio, a decision was taken to streamline activities.

“3 believes its support of the Irish football team will deliver the most commercial value for the brand into the future.”
